HOW DOES SUCH A SIMPLE RIG DO SO MUCH SO EFFICIENTLY?

Less is more in this regard. The same technology used to design an aeroplane wing is used to support the Nonsuch mast high in the air. Both wing and mast are of aluminum. The mast is in two sections. It is extruded and spun to taper. It is sleeved together in the middle and is extremely strong and slightly flexible.

Designed to flex, the need to stay the mast under tremendous compressive loads was eliminated. This mast flex spills wind from sudden gusts allowing Nonsuch to sail on her lines and maintain a responsive helm. No more burying the rail. No more weather helm. No more stays, turnbuckles or shrouds.

WHY IS THE WISHBONE SUCH AN ADVANTAGE?

Nonsuch 30By eliminating shrouds and stays, we are now free to use a wishbone boom. This special boom does it all. It holds the sail when furled or reefed in its own cradle lines. It eliminates the need for a traveller or vang. It flattens the sail perfectly by pushing both down and aft, creating a perfect upwind sail shape. The wishbone does not impede the shape of the sail like a regular boom. This high mast and perfect sail shape make the Nonsuch excel to windward. When reaching, the sail is let way out. The sail is trimmed to the end of the wishbone, not to the side of the boat (a genoa is trimmed to the side of the boat). This special boom allows a perfect sail shape along the full length of the sail, not just the forward portion. This drives the boat forward and not over on its side. No more rail in the water. No more weather helm - straight up, easy to steer and very fast.

Another wishbone advantage is the sail shape attained when running down wind. Trimmed 90 degrees or more (remember no shrouds), will give maximum sail area and you simply point the boat at the next mark. No more tacking down wind. No more spinnakers needed. Just good boat speed and a steady helm.

HOW FAST IS A NONSUCH?

Nonsuch 30Very fast. 38.8 knots in a Nonsuch? Not quite. However, the current world record of sailing at 38.8 knots was accomplished by one man holding a wishbone boom, one sail and an un-stayed mast. Sound familiar? Same rig, smaller boat. 38.8 knots was accomplished by this same sail plan on a surfboard.

The Nonsuch is no surfboard. She is commodious, well appointed and well finished. Her under water configuration is extremely up to date. Her long waterline, fin keel and balanced rudder combine with this very efficient rig to provide the best sailing, fastest and most weatherly cruising sailboat on the water today.

WHY ARE THE INTERIOR ACCOMMODATIONS OF THE NONSUCH SO POPULAR AND HOW IS THIS ACCOMPLISHED?

Nonsuch 30The accommodations made possible by the elimination of chainplates and midship structural bulkheads provide a typical catboat interior. Uniquely spacious and uncluttered, the vast extra space is lent to special storage, deep drawers, wide hanging lockers, galley cabinets and counter space. Private forward staterooms with a chest of drawers, heads with a stall shower and gourmet galleys are the hallmark of Nonsuch. All Nonsuch interiors are joined in matched grain teak. This is finished with many coats of hand rubbed satin varnish.

Carrying the Nonsuch beam all the way aft, provides a flat run for speed. It also provides great inherent stability. The extra plus, however, is the size of the cockpit. Deep, dry and uncluttered, the Nonsuch cockpit is really another room.
